A guide on how to paint an ultramarine from the chapter's 1st company

1. Undercoat the model with a spray of Chaos Black or any other black spray paint you may have. After this, apply Abaddon Black over the model to cover any places you may have missed.
2. Basecoat the blue armour with Macragge Blue . Don't worry if you go over onto other parts of the model as these will all be painted over later
3. Wash the model with Nuln Oil . This will darken down the blue armour and significantly darken the recesses of the armour.
4. Layer some thinned Macragge Blue onto the armour, keeping away from the recesses. This brightens the blue slightly but feel free to skip this step for a slightly darker Ultramarine.
5. Drybrush the model with Calgar Blue . Practise on the model's weapons or base to make sure you're happy with the amount coming off the brush.
6. Lightly drybrush the model with Fenrisian Grey . Use even less paint than previously
7. Paint the black details with Black Legion . These are the weapon casings and mesh underarmour.
8. Since this is a marine from the first company, basecoat the shoulder trim and helmet with Corax White . Apply this in two thin coats.
9. Wash the white with Apothecary White . Don't worry if this darkens it down more than you like as we'll be going over it again in the next step.
10. Layer some Corax White onto the helmet. Like before, keep the paint away from the recesses.
11. Edge highlight the white with White Scar . Keep your paint thin and go slowly, using the edge of your brush where possible.
12. Basecoat the brown leather with Mournfang Brown . Apply in two coats.
13. Basecoat the parchment with Rakarth Flesh . Apply two thin coats.
14. Wash the leather and parchment with Agrax Earthshade . This will darken down these areas and add more depth.
15. Basecoat the wax seels with Barak-Nar Burgundy . Try and avoid the recently painted parchment.
16. Layer the wax seels with Pink Horror . Focus the paint on the rim of the seel and the symbol on it if it has any.
17. If the model has a tabard, basecoat it with Wraithbone . Apply two thin coats as usual.
18. If the model has a crux terminatus such as terminators or special veteran sculpts, basecoat them in Grey Seer .
19. Wash the tabard with Skeleton Horde . Let the paint go to the recesses.
20. Basecoat all the gold areas with Retributor Armour . If you are painting second company Ultramarines use this paint for the shoulder trim as well.
21. Wash the gold with Guilliman Flesh . Use a dry brush to remove the contrast paint if it pools to heavily in one area.
22. Basecoat all the silver metal areas with Leadbelcher . These areas include the vents on the power packs, the Gunmetal, metal details on the helmet, and this guy's auspex.
23. Wash the areas painted in the previous step and the crux terminatus (if the model has it) with Nuln Oil .
24. Carefully paint the eye lenses with Blood Angels Red . This will give the lenses shading and a highlight all in one go. Also paint sword hilts with this colour.
25. Edge highlight the brown leather with Skrag Brown . Keep your paint thin and hand steady when doing this.
26. Edge highlight the black details with Dawnstone . Use the same method used in the previous step. Also basecoat any rocks on the base with this as well.
27. Carefully edge highlight all metallics with Stormhost Silver . Once again keep your hand steady and go slowly whilst doing this.
28. Paint a small line of Wild Rider Red onto the eye lenses. Avoid the darker red in the recesses.
29. Paint the green screens like the screen of this auspex with Moot Green . Apply two thin coats for an even coat.
30. Carefully paint some lines onto the screen with Warpstone Glow . Take your time and tidy up with more Moot Green if you aren't happy with what you have.
31. Basecoat the base with Steel Legion Drab . Also paint the base rim with this colour.
32. Paint Armageddon Dust onto the base. This will dry as a sandy texture.
33. Wash the base and rocks with Seraphim Sepia . Wait for the texture paint to fully dry before hand
34. Drybrush the base and rocks with Pallid Wych Flesh to finish off the model.
