How to paint the Hairfoot Jouster Riding a Sheep model from North Star Military Figures. This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how I painted my copy of this miniature.

Wool

  1. Basecoat with 1:1 Celestra Grey and White .
  2. Drybrush with White .
  3. Wash all over with Apothecary White .
  4. Mix some Skavenblight Dinge into the Apothecary White , then use this mix to shade the fur. Keep this thin, to preserve the mix of white shades underneath.
  5. Further define with smaller amount of Skavenblight Dinge .
  6. Pick out the raised texture of the wool with White . Go heavier with upward facing details, but stick to smaller specular highlights where it is more shaded.

Sheep Skin

  1. Basecoat with Black .
  2. Mix some Skavenblight Dinge into the Black and add general highlights.
  3. With pure Skavenblight Dinge , highlight with finer highlights.
  4. With a 1:1 mix of Skavenblight Dinge and Karak Stone , selectively highlight.
  5. Add a little White to the above mix and add very small or specular highlights.

There are a few details on the sheep that could do with some variety, so I changed up the highlight colours. For example, I mixed Cadian Fleshtone , then Screaming Skull into my initial highlight colour to highlight around the mouth and the inner ear. I also leaned towards Dark Reaper , then Thunderhawk Blue and Fenrisian Grey for highlighting hooves and around the nostrils.

Red Leather Saddle

  1. Basecoat with 1:1 Khorne Red and Doombull Brown .
  2. Shade with a thin mix of Khorne Red and Black .
  3. Mix the base colour 1:1 with Jokaero Orange and apply chunky highlights.
  4. Now, apply fine highlights with pure Jokaero Orange .
  5. Add selective highlights of 1:1 Jokaero Orange and Ushabti Bone .
  6. Finish with small Ushabti Bone highlights.

Skin

  1. Basecoat with an equal parts mix of Cadian Fleshtone , Kislev Flesh and White .
  2. Shade with Reikland Fleshshade .
  3. Deep shade eye sockets Doombull Brown .
  4. Tidy up with the base colour, if needed.
  5. Selectively highlight with a 1:1 mix of the base colour and White .
  6. Mix the above paint with White in a 1:1 ratio AGAIN. Now add a few specular highlights.

Blonde Hair

  1. Basecoat with Tallarn Sand .
  2. Wash with 1:1 Reikland Fleshshade and Seraphim Sepia .
  3. Pick out sculpted details with 1:1 Tallarn Sand and Ushabti Bone .
  4. Finish with specular highlights of Ushabti Bone .

Cream Cloth

  1. Basecoat with Ushabti Bone .
  2. Add soft shading with a mix of Ushabti Bone and Steel Legion Drab .
  3. Mix a little Rhinox Hide into the previous stages paint, and shade the deepest part of the recesses.
  4. Add highlights with Screaming Skull .
  5. Mix your Screaming Skull with some White , then selectively highlights.
  6. Finish with some small pure White highlights.

Rope

  1. Basecoat with Ushabti Bone .
  2. Wash with Skeleton Horde .
  3. Highlight ridges with Screaming Skull .
  4. Mix a little White in, then highlight more selectively.

Green Cloth

  1. Basecoat with Elysian Green .
  2. Soft shade with Deathworld Forest .
  3. Mix your Deathworld Forest 1:1 with Black , then shade with this paint (thinned).
  4. Add chunky highlights of 1:1 Elysian Green and Ogryn Camo .
  5. Now apply fine highlights with pure Ogryn Camo .
  6. Mix a little White into the Ogryn Camo and apply selective highlights.

Dark Green Cloth

  1. Basecoat with Castellan Green .
  2. Shade with a thin 1:1 mix of Deathworld Forest . and Black .
  3. Add chunky highlights of 1:1 Deathworld Forest and Loren Forest .
  4. Now apply fine highlights with Loren Forest .
  5. Selectively highlight with 1:1 Loren Forest and Screaming Skull .

Light Green Cloth

  1. Basecoat with Nurgling Green .
  2. Shade with some thin Straken Green .
  3. Mix in some Corvus Black , then more precisely shade where the cloth meets other materials.
  4. Mix a little White into the Nurgling Green , then highlight the cloth selectively.

Dark Brown Leather

  1. Basecoat with Rhinox Hide .
  2. Add edge highlights to everything and volumetric highlights with Doombull Brown .
  3. Selectively highlight with XV-88 , using the big highlights from the previous stage as a guide.
  4. Finish with very small Screaming Skull highlights.

Wood

  1. Basecoat with Mournfang Brown .
  2. Shade with a mix of Rhinox Hide and Agrax Earthshade .
  3. Add chunky highlights of XV-88 .
  4. Now apply fine highlights of Balor Brown .
  5. Selectively highlight with Screaming Skull .

I felt the wood looked a little plain with standard highlighting, so I established some wood grain at each highlight stage. I made the highlights smaller, and stuck within the boundaries of the previous stage.

Metal

  1. Basecoat with Leadbelcher .
  2. Wash with 1:1 Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil .
  3. Highlight with Ironbreaker .
  4. Finish with selective highlights of Silver RLM01 Metallic .
