Here is how I painted the main elements of these Choas Daemons for my Kill Team. I probably over complicated the original zenethal, but I'm happy with them overall.

Pink Skin

  1. I primed my horrors with Rust-Oleum Red Matte primer. Just to make the transition to the fleshy colour easier.
  2. Basecoat the flesh with Bugman's Glow .
  3. With a 2:1 mix of Bugman's Glow and Pale Flesh , add a zenethal highlight to the flesh. Do this from a downwards 45 degree angle.
  4. Reverse the ratios and do a straight down highlight, using two parts Pale Flesh and a one part Bugman's Glow .
  5. Now is a great time to paint the inside of the mouth and tongue, as it will be hard to get in here later. Check the section further down the page, if you want to see my method.
  6. Thin Volupus Pink down with four parts Contrast Medium and apply it to the skin. Brush towards shadowed areas and stop it pooling anywhere undesirable.
  7. Now take one drop of Volupus Pink , one Shyish Purple and two drops of Contrast Medium . Use this mix to shade deep recesses on the skin and miximise contrast with our future highlights.
  8. In the next few steps we will be highlighting the flesh. So, I would recommend painting the eyes and any basing materials, if you have not done so already. A breakdown of how I painted the eyes can also be found below.
  9. Make a mix of 80% Bugman's Glow and 20% Pale Flesh . Get this nice and thin and glaze if over raised parts of the skin.
  10. Add a chunky highlight to the same area, this time with Bugman's Glow and Pale Flesh mixed equally.
  11. Now adjust the ratios again, using 80% Pale Flesh and 20% Bugman's Glow . Use this for a selective highlight of the skin.
  12. Use pure Pale Flesh and add specular highlights within the last stage.

Blue Tongue

  1. First, make sure the inside of the mouth is painted Abaddon Black , as it will be super hard to get in here later. I also basecoat the tongue to remove the pink undertones.
  2. Now we basecoat the tongue with a 1:1 mix of Abaddon Black and The Fang . I reached right in and painted as much tongue as I could. I only did one thin coat, pulling my brush towards the tip.
  3. With pure The Fang (thinned a little with water), give all visible parts of the tongue its third coat of paint. Again, I would recommend pulling your brush toward the tip, making it slightly more vibrant towards the end.
  4. Now unify everything with a was of Drakenhof Nightshade .
  5. When the wash is dry, you may want to re-establish The Fang in some areas. I do this by glazing it onto upward facing parts of the tongue and prominent ridges. This will give us a nice area to build up our highlights in the later steps.
  6. With Russ Grey add a fine highlight, covering a smaller area with this step.
  7. Take Fenrisian Grey and add small higlights within the last stage.
  8. Use Blue Horror to add a specular highlight on points and in the centre of previous highlights.

Yellow Eyes

  1. Basecoat the eyes with Wraithbone .
  2. Wash the eyes with Iyanden Yellow .
  3. On large eyes, I would recommend glazing some Flash Gitz Yellow towards the centre.
  4. Finally, finish off the eyes with a small dot of Dead White .

Bleached Bone Teeth

  1. Basecoat with Rakarth Flesh .
  2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade thinned with Lahmian Medium 1:1.
  3. Highlight all raised parts of the teeth with a 1:1 mix of Rakarth Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh .
  4. Highlight toward the points with a smaller highlight of Pallid Wych Flesh .
  5. Add specular highlights of a pure white (like Dead White ) to the points of your teeth.

Beaks, Horns and Claws

  1. Basecoat with Ushabti Bone .
  2. Wash the bone with Skeleton Horde and Contrast Medium mixed 1:1.
  3. Ephasize particularly deep recesses with Agrax Earthshade .
  4. Add fine highlights of Screaming Skull to everything.
  5. Add selective highlights of Pallid Wych Flesh to everything.
  6. Finish of this bone colour with specular highlights of a pure white (like Dead White ).

Gold Jewellery

  1. Mix Vallejo Metal Color Gold and Copper 4:1 and basecoat the gold jewelry.
  2. Was the metal with Wyldwood , but thin it with 4 parts Contrast Medium .
  3. Reestablish gold on upward facing/exposed areas with the same Gold and Copper used previously.
  4. Add a drop of MetalColor Chrome or Silver to the mix and highlight the metal carefully.
