All but one of the paints used in this guide were from the Two Thin Coats Anniversary Kit, celebrating 5 years of the range. As such, there is more mixing than is completely necessary when considering the full range.

Blue Cloak

  1. Basecoat with 2:1 Witching Hour Blue and Doom Death Black .
  2. Increase the amount of Doom Death Black in the above mix, so they are now roughly 1:1. use this colour to shade the folds and recesses of the cloth.
  3. With pure Witching Hour Blue , highlight the cloth. You can be quite generous here, picking out exposed cloth, pulling your brush towards where we will develop out highlights.
  4. Mix some Twin Suns Yellow into your Witching Hour Blue and add smaller highlights, plus edge highlights to all of the cloth.
  5. Increase the amount of Twin Suns Yellow in the mix and highlight more selectively. Repeat as many times as needed, untill you are happy.
  6. I like to finish with speculat highlights of pure Twin Suns Yellow on points and well defined curves too.

Purple Cloak

  1. Basecoat with 2:1 Spectral Purple and Doom Death Black .
  2. Increase the amount of Doom Death Black in the above mix, so they are now roughly 1:1. use this colour to shade the folds and recesses of the cloth.
  3. With pure Spectral Purple, highlight the cloth. You can be quite generous here, picking out exposed cloth, pulling your brush towards where we will develop out highlights.
  4. Mix some Twin Suns Yellow into your Spectral Purple and add smaller highlights, plus fine edge highlights to all of the cloth.
  5. Increase the amount of Twin Suns Yellow in the mix and highlight more selectively. Repeat as many times as needed, untill you are happy.
  6. I like to finish with speculat highlights of pure Twin Suns Yellow on points and well defined curves too.

Cream Cloth and Tassel

  1. For the basecoat I took a blob of Cherubic White and then gently mixed in small amount of Noble Steed Brown and Pustule Ochre, until it looked right. Ratios are hard, but just go by eye, until you get the cream colour you want it to read as.
  2. For the shading, simplu mix in increasing amounts of Noble Steed Brown , shading more selectively as you add more. I would recommend keeping this thin, to keep the shading more subtle.
  3. Now just add Cherubic White to the original basecoat andhighlight. Again, I would recommend doing this in a couple of passes, getting more selective as you add more Cherubic White.
  4. Finish with very small highlights of pure Cherubic White.

Brown Leather

  1. Basecoat with 2:1 Noble Steed Brown and Doom Death Black .
  2. Mix some extra Doom Death Black into the above paint. this this to a wash like consistency and shade the leather.
  3. Add general highlights to the leather with Noble Steed Brown and a little Fanatic Orange.
  4. Increase the amount of Fanatic orange in the mix, until it reads as a desaturated orange. Now use this colour to edge highlight the leather.
  5. Mix Twin Suns Yellow into the above paint and highlight more selectively. Repeat as many times as needed, untill you are happy.
  6. When you reach the point that you cannot highlight any more, mix some Cherubic White into your paint. Use this colour to add a few specular highlights.

Wood

  1. Basecoat with 2:1 Noble Steed Brown and Doom Death Black .
  2. Mix some extra Doom Death Black into the above paint. this this to a wash like consistency and shade the leather.
  3. Highlight with 2:1 Noble Steed Brown and Pustule Ochre. Apply these as scratchy lines.
  4. For highlights, gradually mix more Twin Suns Yellow into the last stages paint, highlight and then repeat the process. At each stage of this highlighting, cover a smaller area, untill you are working with an off-white colour.

Skin

  1. Mix 5 parts Pustule Ochre, 4 parts Hellspawn Red and 1 part Witching Hour Blue . Now add Cherubic White slowly, until it reads as a ruddy skin colour. If you struggle, you may need to fine tune by adding more Pustule Ochre or maybe Hellspawn Red . Use this as a basecoat for the skin.
  2. Fpr the shading, first mix Flayer Red, Noble Steed Brown and Doom Death Black in roughly equal amounts. This colour should be a murky dark red-brrown. Mix a little of this into some of the basecolour, thin it, and apply general shading to the skin.
  3. Around the eyes, you may want to darken the above mix with a little more Doombull Brown , and use it to deepend them. Now is a good time to paint the eyes.
  4. For highlights, gradually mix more Cherubic White into the base colour, highlight and then repeat the process. At each stage of this highlighting, cover a smaller area, untill you are happy with how it looks.
  5. Finish with a couple of pure Cherubic White specular highlights.

Bristles

  1. Basecoat with Noble Steed Brown .
  2. Wash with Battle Mud Wash .
  3. For highlights, gradually mix more Twin Suns Yellow into the base colour, highlight and then repeat the process. At each stage of this highlighting, cover a smaller area, untill you are working with an off-white colour.

Yellow Paint

  1. Basecoat with Pustule Ochre.
  2. Glaze a little Fanatic orangeonto downward facing surfaces.
  3. For highlights, gradually mix more Twin Suns Yellow into the base colour, highlight and then repeat the process. At each stage of this highlighting, cover a smaller area, untill you are working with pure Twin Suns Yellow.
  4. Glaze with Yellow Glaze , pulling your brush away from the highlights. This stage is purely to add richness to the yellow.
  5. Finish with specular Cherubic White highlights.

Steel

  1. Basecoat with Ironclad Silver.
  2. Mix some Black Ink into your Ironclad Silver and shade. repeatingl and being more precise if needed.
  3. Highlight with a mix of Ironclad Silver and Silver RLM01 Metallic .
  4. Finish with selective highlights of pure Silver RLM01 Metallic .

Gold

  1. Basecoat with Dragon's Gold .
  2. Shade with Battle Mud Wash .
  3. Highlight with a mix of Dragon's Gold and Silver RLM01 Metallic .
  4. Finish with selective highlights of pure Silver RLM01 Metallic .

Orc Head

  1. Basecoat with a ratio of roughly 1:1 Emerald Green and Pustule Ochre, leaning slightly more towards the green.
  2. Thin some pure Emerald Green and add shading to the skin. Make this quite general, leaving room for more precise shading within it.
  3. Mix a little Doom Death Black into your Emerald Green , then use this to add shading to the very deepest recesses.
  4. For highlights, mix a small amount Twin Suns Yellow into your base colour, then highlight quite generally.
  5. Increase the amount of Twin Suns Yellow in the mix and highlight more selectively. Repeat as many times as needed, untill you are happy.
  6. I like to finish with speculat highlights of pure Twin Suns Yellow on points and well defined details.

I finished the skin with with glazes of some of the initial highlight colour of Sir Coates face, focusing on the lip, ear tips and nose. I then then highlighted in much the same way.

Red Eyes

  1. I basecoated with a mix of Hellspawn Red , Noble Steed Brown and Doom Death Black . This colour should be a murky dark red-brrown.
  2. Highlight the eyeballs with Hellspawn Red , pulling your brush towards the centre.
  3. Highlight the eye with Fanatic Orange .
  4. Highlight more selectively with a mix of Fanatic Orange and Twin Suns Yellow.
  5. Finish with a specular highlight of pure Twin Suns Yellow.

Tongue

  1. For the basecoat I mixed Spectral Purple, Hellspawn Red and Hot Pink , darkening it a little by mixing in Doom Death Black and Noble Steed Brown as needed. This is another stage where I just fine tuned it as I went, but we are aiming for a dark, slightly fleshy pink-purple.
  2. Add a little more Doom Death Black to some of the basecoat then shade where the tongue meets other materials and split the tonge in the middle, towards the top.
  3. We now mix some of the initial basecoat w1:1 with some Hot Pink and highlight.
  4. Add fine highlights with pure Hot Pink .
  5. Selectively highlight with a mix of Hot Pink and Twin Suns Yellow.
  6. Finish with a specular highlight of Twin Suns Yellow on the tip.

Teeth

For this small detail, I used the same basic mix of Cherubic White with small amounts of Noble Steed Brown and Pustule Ochre used in the cream cloth. This time leaning more towards the Pustule Ochre, to yellow it. I then shaded and highlighted in the same way.
