"Dirty wasteland" camo scheme for Warhammer 40k Steel Legion (or other Guard or general military units).

  1. Prime the mini white.
  2. Uniform base color: Mix Russian Uniform WWII with Neutral Grey (roughly 1:1). Paint the entire greatcoat.
  3. Camo scheme: Paint several large patches of Vallejo Beige Follow up with small lines and pathces of German Grey and Flat Brown on the edges of the beige patches
  4. Weapons: Paint the barrels and magazines dark metallic color (e.g. Gunmetal Grey ). Use any black for cases and follow it up with a gloss finish (you can use a gloss varnish or a gloss-drying ink or wash)
  5. Boots and gloves: Basecoat German Grey , highlight Neutral Grey . Paint trousers Neutral Grey and highlight with a brighter gray, e.g. Wolf Grey .
  6. Details: Use Russian Uniform WWII and English Uniform for pouches, sleepbags and backpacks. For metal items (water bottles, air filters) I used Gunmetal Grey washed with Armor Wash .
  7. Head: Paint gas mask and goggles' strip Russian Uniform WWII . For helmet use German Grey and apply a glossy finish. You can use any blue for the glass. Similarly, use any fleshtone you like for the skin of the sculpts with goggles on the helmet - just paint the area "skin color".
  8. Use a wash of your preference to add a bit of depth to the details and gas mask. I used Soft Tone .
  9. To highlight the uniform apply a very light drybrush of Beige . Your goal is to lightly "dust" the raised parts of the uniform with the sandy color, not to apply an actual layer of paint. Do it after the other details are painted - it doesn't hurt if the strips and pouches receive a bit of the same highlight.
