When building these bases, I applied patches of sand over PVA glue and Agrellan Earth before painting. The rocks are a mix of cat litter and flat bark chips.
- Basecost with Zandri Dust .
- Wash with Agrax Earthshade using a large brush, not letting it pool too much. Avoid getting any on the rocks, we will sort them out later.
- Re-drybrush with Zandri Dust .
- Drybrush slightly more lightly with Ushabti Bone , going a little harder on the rocks.
- Lightly drybrush with Pallid Wych Flesh . The aim is for it to just leave occasional dots on particuarly prominant points. Again, be a little rougher with the rocks.
- Shade the rocks with a 1:1 mix of Reikland Fleshshade and Lahmian Medium . I avoided an all over wash, focusing on recesses and downward facing surfaces.
- Selectively highlight the rocks with 1:1 Pallid Wych Flesh and White . Make sure you take advantages of hard edges on the large flat "rocks" for extra punch.
- Finish with very small/specular highlights of White on points and distinct curves on the rocks.
