For the Penal Legionnaire for my Inquisitorial Agents Kill Team, I wanted coloured that more suggested he was a prisoner out on release. I think he reads as a former ganger out on day release. He could even be used in Necromunda, to be honest.

Skin

  1. Basecoat with 4:1 Cadian Fleshtone and Screamer Pink .
  2. Mix the previous paint 1:1 with Cadian Fleshtone , cover everything but a small amount of the recesses and downward facing sections.
  3. Highlight with pure Cadian Fleshtone
  4. Apply fine highlights of Kislev Flesh .
  5. Finish with small highlights of Pallid Wych Flesh .

For the stubble parts of the head, I like to over highlight it. Then glaze with 1:1 Cadian Fleshtone and Dawnstone .

Hair

I had primed my mini with Wraithbone , so was working from a very light colour at this point. Of you primes with a drastically different colour, I would recommend applying a basecoat of Wraithbone first.

  1. Cover the purple section with Shyish Purple .
  2. Over brush this section with Xereus Purple .
  3. Mix the Xereus Purple
    1:1 with Wraithbone and highlight.
  4. Cover the green section with Ork Flesh .
  5. Highlight with Moot Green .
  6. Mix the Moot Green
    1:1 with Wraithbone and selectively.
  7. Add a few small highlights with pure Wraithbone to both colours, where needed.

Orange Cloth

  1. Basecoat with 1:2 Jokaero Orange and Troll Slayer Orange .
  2. Shade with thin Troll Slayer Orange and Word Bearers Red , mixed 1:1.
  3. Deep shade with small amounts of Word Bearers Red .
  4. Add fine highlights of 1:1 Troll Slayer Orange and Yriel Yellow .
  5. Selectively highlight with 1:1 Yriel Yellow and Wraithbone .
  6. Finish with small/specular highlights of Wraithbone .

White Cloth

  1. Basecoat with 1:1 Celestra Grey and White .
  2. Add a small amount of Dark Reaper to the above mix and apply some general shading.
  3. Increase the amount of Dark Reaper for deep shading.
  4. With a 1:2 mix of Celestra Grey and :VallejoModelColor/White add some highlights.
  5. Finish with a few small highlights of White .

Black Leather

  1. Basecoat with Abaddon Black .
  2. Glaze chunky highlights of Stegadon Scale Green .
  3. Add fine highlights of Thunderhawk Blue .
  4. Selectively highlight with Fenrisian Grey .
  5. Specular highlights of Fenrisian Grey , with a little White mixed in.

Dark Brown Leather

  1. Basecoat the leather area with Rhinox Hide .
  2. Glaze most of the leather with thinned Mournfang Brown . Use quite a small brush and drag towards edges in rough lines. This should create some extra texture.
  3. Add a chunky edge highlight of Skrag Brown to all edges.
  4. Highlight everything again, this time with a fine line of Skrag Brown and Ushabti Bone mixed 1:1. This is a good mix to throw in occasional fine lines as scratches too.
  5. With pure Ushabti Bone , selectively highlight corners and exposed edges of the leather. Put a dot of this colour where the additional scratched above meet edges too.
  6. Add a little pure white (like Dead White ) to your Ushabti Bone and add dot highlights to corners.

Blue Details

  1. Basecoat with 1:1 : Kantor Blue and Abaddon Black .
  2. Pick out all raised details with Kantor Blue .
  3. Add increasing amounts of Ice Yellow into the Kantor Blue and highlight smaller and smaller.
  4. Finish with specular highlights of pure Ice Yellow , where relevant.

Steel

  1. Basecoat with Leadbelcher .
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil .
  3. If needed, enhance definition in recesses with a 1:1 mix of Abaddon Black and Rhinox Hide .
  4. Add highlights with Ironbreaker .
  5. Now selectively highlight with Vallejo Model Air Silver RLM01 Metallic .

Hazard Stripes

  1. Basecoat with Averland Sunset .
  2. Wash with Iyanden Yellow .
  3. Carefully paint in the black stripes with Abaddon Black .
  4. Highlight the top edges of the stripe with a line of Averland Sunset , again.
  5. Where the previous highlight isn't noticeable, go over the area with a fine line of Averland Sunset and Screaming Skull mixed 1:1.
  6. Finally add a small highlight of Screaming Skull within the last stage.
  7. Highlight the black stripes in the same way. I used Eshin Grey , Dawnstone and Administratum Grey for this.

Gold

For the 'Aquilla', I basecoated with good old Retributor Armour . When it came to the symbol on the Inquisition, I mixed some Silver RLM01 Metallic into my Retributor Armour to make it paler. The shading and highlighting was the same though.

  1. Shade with Gore-grunta Fur .
  2. Enhance with Wyldwood if/where needed.
  3. Now re-establish your basecoat where needed.
  4. Steadily mix Silver RLM01 Metallic into your basecoat, highlighting smaller and smaller each time.
  5. Finish with a specular highlight of Silver RLM01 Metallic .

Brass

  1. Basecoat with Balthasar Gold .
  2. Shade with Agrax Earthshade .
  3. Highlight with Hashut Copper
  4. Selectively highlight with a mix of Hashut Copper and Silver .
  5. Finish with a specular highlight of Silver RLM01 Metallic .
