Although not required, the bases look great when painted.
I wanted to make some plain, flat bases more interesting, so I gave this a try. I kinda like it and I hope someone finds it useful.

This is my work-in-progress approach to "normal" green grass vegetation on dirt surfaces. I use Army Painter Brown Battleground texture and Army Painter Battlefield Basing Glue for convenience/availability.
Now, this is a bit of a specific one. The aim here was to create a neutral, desolate basing scheme, that gives the hint of life having existed, just under the surface. It is meant to represent the apocalyptic setting of '1490 Doom', but could be used for many other gaming systems.
