Basing steps
Get a spoonful of [Vallejo's Diorama FX Ground Texture - Grey Sand (26.215)] into a small bowl and add 30-50% Elmer's Glue and mix it together.
This is because the texture by itself is too thick and leaves marks as it is being sculpted. Using water leaves bubbles and the sand doesn't hold its shape after drying.
Spread sand mixture on base, making light waves and hills. With a model spatula, pull the sand horizontally with the flat part, from low to high points, pulling the spatula up off the peak of the hill. If the mixture is soft enough, small peaks will form and then slowly sink back down to look like natural sand dunes.
Let dry for at least 24 hrs, just to be safe. Sculpt another layer on top if you don't like the way that it dried.
- Use Desert Yellow to fill in the low parts of the sand dunes in shadow
- Highlight with watered-down Auric Armour Gold at the peaks, and put a bit it on terrain that is up against the sand, so it looks like small granules of sand are stuck to the terrain
Varnish
- Varnish with Satin spray
