This varied model kit was painted for an article in "Wargames Soldiers and Strategy". If you want to know more about my thoughts and approach to painting this kit, along with some general advice when painting wood and scenery in general, be sure to check it out.

OK, let's get this out of the way first. I vaguely refer to a brown wash at several point in this guide. Specifically, I am using what is generally referred to as "Marine Juice" (https://youtube.com/shorts/vxfgZKfYCZc). This is a mix of 4 parts Lahmian Medium , 3 parts Dark Tone and 3 parts Reikland Fleshshade .

You could of could just use Agrax Earthshade and thin it with Lahmian Medium . I just prefer this very specific mix for adding general shading to a textures surface.

Wood 1

  1. Basecoat with Steel Legion Drab .
  2. Wash with a brown of your choosing. If it is one straight out of the bottle, I would recommend thinning roughly 1:1 with some medium.
  3. Drybrush heavily with Baneblade Brown .
  4. Lightly drybrush with Karak Stone .
  5. Optionally, selectively edge highlight with 1:1 Karak Stone & White if you want to go the extra mile.

Wood 2

  1. Basecoat with Rhinox Hide .
  2. Drybrush of Doombull Brown .
  3. Light drybrush of Gorthor Brown .
  4. Shade deep recesses with Nuln Oil and a thin brush.
  5. Optionally, selectively edge highlight with Baneblade Brown if you want to go the extra mile.

Wood 3

  1. Basecoat with 1:1 Dryad Bark & Mournfang Brown .
  2. Drybrush with a 1:1 mix of the base colour & Karak Stone .
  3. Lightly drybrush with Karak Stone .
  4. Run some thin Dryad Bark into deep recesses. Don't worry about doing this on woodgrain, just distinct details between planks etc.
  5. Optionally, selectively edge highlight with 2:1 Karak Stone & Wraithbone if you want to go the extra mile.

Wood 4

  1. Basecoat with Thondia Brown .
  2. Drybrush heavily with 2:1 with Thondia Brown and Steel Legion Drab .
  3. Mix the previous paint 1:1 Administratum Grey and drybrush lightly.
  4. Run some thin Rhinox Hide into deep recesses. Don't worry about doing this on woodgrain, just distinct details between planks etc.
  5. Optionally, selectively edge highlight with Administratum Grey if you want to go the extra mile.

Wood 5

  1. Basecoat with Mournfang Brown .
  2. Add chnky highlights with XV-88 .
  3. Apply fine highlights with Balor Brown .
  4. Optionally, selectively edge highlight with Screaming Skull if you want to go the extra mile.

Canvas 1

  1. Basecoat with Karak Stone .
  2. Shade with an all over brown wash of your choice. Thin with roughly the same amount of medium, to encourage the pigment into folds.
  3. Drybrush heavily with Rakarth Flesh
  4. Lightly drybrush with 1:1 Rakarth Flesh and White .
  5. Finish with selective White highlights.

Canvas 2

  1. Basecoat with Baneblade Brown .
  2. Shade with an all over brown wash of your choice. Thin with roughly the same amount of medium, to encourage the pigment into folds.
  3. Drybrush heavily with Karak Stone .
  4. Lightly drybrush with Ushabti Bone .
  5. Finish with selective highlights of 1:1 Ushabti Bone and White .

Canvas 3

  1. Basecoat with Tallarn Sand .
  2. Shade with an all over brown wash of your choice. Thin with roughly the same amount of medium, to encourage the pigment into folds.
  3. Drybrush heavily with 1:1 Tallarn Sand and Screaming Skull .
  4. Lightly drybrush with Screaming Skull .
  5. Finish with selective highlights of 1:1 Screaming Skull and White .

Canvas 4

  1. Basecoat with Steel Legion Drab .
  2. Shade with an all over brown wash of your choice. Thin with roughly the same amount of medium, to encourage the pigment into folds.
  3. Drybrush heavily with Baneblade Brown .
  4. Lightly drybrush with : Karak Stone .
  5. Finish with selective Screaming Skull highlights.

Rope

  1. Basecoat with Ushabti Bone .
  2. Wash with Skeleton Horde .
  3. Pick out ridges and raised details with Screaming Skull .

I added a little variety by mixing up the contrast paints I used as a wash across the kit. The main colours I used were Aggaros Dunes and Nazdreg Yellow , but to be honest, I felt these were a little too yellow.

Red Cloth

  1. Basecoat with Khorne Red .
  2. Drybrush heavily with Evil Sunz Scarlet .
  3. Lightly drybrush with Troll Slayer Orange .
  4. Optionally, selectively edge highlight with Fire Dragon Bright if you want to go the extra mile.

Blue Cloth

  1. Basecoat with Kantor Blue .
  2. Drybrush heavily with Caledor Sky .
  3. Lightly drybrush with Teclis Blue .
  4. Optionally, selectively edge highlight with Lothern Blue if you want to go the extra mile.

Furnace

  1. Basecoat the inside of the body and within the spout with Rhinox Hide , to emulate shadow.
  2. Basecoat the rest of the furnace with Ushabti Bone .
  3. Wash with 1:1 Seraphim Sepia and Lahmian Medium .
  4. Drybrush with Pallid Wych Flesh and use this paint to underline the cracks.
  5. Selectively highlight further with White .

Ground

  1. Basecoat with Mournfang Brown .
  2. Drybrush with Zamesi Desert .
  3. Drybrush lightly with Ushabti Bone .

Once you have the last two elements painted, consider a wash or two of Agrax Earthshade within the furnace and on the ground directly below it.

Red Pottery

  1. Basecoat with Word Bearers Red .
  2. Add general shading with 2:1 Khorne Red and Abaddon Black .
  3. Increase the amount of Abaddon Black in the mix and selectively shade.

  5. Add finer highlights with 1:1 Squig Orange and Tau Light Ochre .
  6. Finish with selective highlights of Tau Light Ochre .

  1. Basecoat with Thunderhawk Blue .
  2. Add general shading with Dark Reaper .
  3. Add Abaddon Black to your Dark Reaper and more selectively shade.
  4. Highlight with 1:1 Thunderhawk Blue and Fenrisian Grey .
  5. Add finer highlights with Fenrisian Grey .
  6. Finish with selective highlights of Blue Horror .

  1. Basecoat with Ushabti Bone .
  2. Wash with a 1:1 mix of Aggaros Dunes and Contrast Medium .
  3. Pick out small highlights of Screaming Skull of curved strands.

Bread

  1. Basecoat with Ushabti Bone .
  2. Shade with some very thin Baneblade Brown .
  3. Separate rolls and shade around them with some thin Dryad Bark .
  4. Glaze parts of the rolls with Skrag Brown . I did this in a few passes, to help create an gradient. Be sure to avoid where the bread splits, keeping the basecoat untouched.
  5. Cover a smaller central area with glazes and stippled Mournfang Brown .
  6. Pick out edges where the loaf splits with small amounts of Rhinox Hide .
  7. Finish by picking out a few specular White highlights where the loaf has split.
