Colour scheme for my custom Space Marine chapter, the Dark Vipers.

The general order of getting the main colours down should be:

  1. Basecoat all the purple armour, metal parts, and leather
  2. Recess shade and glaze the purple armour, wash the metal and leather
  3. Paint and shade the Imperial Aquila and then touch up any mistakes
  4. Basecoat the shoulder pads and any other black areas

Purple armour

  1. Basecoat with Xereus Purple
  2. Recess shade with Nuln Oil
  3. Make a glaze by mixing Naggaroth Night with a lot of water, and then carefully darken down the bottom parts of the armour panels with lots of thing coats of this glaze mix
  4. Edge highlight with Genestealer Purple
  5. Spot highlight with Dechala Lilac

Undersuit

  1. Basecoat with Corvus Black
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Highlight with Mechanicus Standard Grey

Black armour

  1. Basecoat with Abaddon Black
  2. Highlight with Dark Reaper
  3. Fine highlight with Thunderhawk Blue
  4. Spot highlight with Fenrisian Grey
  5. Additional spot highlights with Administratum Grey

Green armour

  1. Basecoat with Moot Green
  2. Recess wash with a 1:1 mix of Warpstone Glow and Lahmian Medium
  3. Layer with Moot Green
  4. Highlight with Poisonous Cloud

Weapon casing

  1. Basecoat with Ushabti Bone
  2. Recess wash with Seraphim Sepia
  3. Edge highlight with Pallid Wych Flesh
  4. Spot highlight with White Scar

Metal

  1. Basecoat with Leadbelcher
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Layer with Leadbelcher
  4. Highlight with Stormhost Silver

Gold

  1. Basecoat with Retributor Armour
  2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade
  3. Highlight with Liberator Gold

Brass

  1. Basecoat with Balthasar Gold
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Highlight with Stormhost Silver

Lenses

  1. Basecoat with Jokaero Orange
  2. Wash with Fuegan Orange
  3. Layer with Fire Dragon Bright
  4. Dot with White Scar

Parchment

  1. Basecoat with Rakarth Flesh
  2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade
  3. Layer with Rakarth Flesh
  4. Highlight with Pallid Wych Flesh

Leather

  1. Basecoat with Dryad Bark
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Layer with Dryad Bark
  4. Highlight with Gorthor Brown
  5. Fine highlight with Baneblade Brown

Purity seals

  1. Basecoat with Screamer Pink
  2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade
  3. Layer with Screamer Pink
  4. Highlight with Pink Horror

Ropes

  1. Basecoat with Dawnstone
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Highlight with Administratum Grey

Green purity seals

I went off the idea of green purity seals and went for the usual colour instead (see above)

  1. Basecoat with Warpstone Glow
  2. Wash the inner part of the seal with Biel-Tan Green
  3. Layer with Warpstone Glow
  4. Layer with Moot Green

Outrider tyres

  1. Basecoat with Corvus Black
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Drybrush with Stormvermin Fur

Plasma

  1. Basecoat with Thousand Sons Blue
  2. Wash with Drakenhof Nightshade
  3. Layer with Thousand Sons Blue
  4. Highlight with Ahriman Blue
  5. Highlight with Baharroth Blue
  6. Spot highlight with White Scar

Bases

  1. Texture with Astrogranite
  2. Wash with watered down Nuln Oil
  3. Drybrush with Rakarth Flesh
  4. Light drybrush with Deepkin Flesh
  5. Paint with rim with Eshin Grey
  6. Add a tuft or two of Mordheim Turf
