Priming

  1. I prime the miniatures with some Trench Brown with a Matt White zenithal highlight.
Without access to rattlecans due to harsh weather here, I've done some with a Mocca Skin basecoat, followed by a Trooper White drybrush, skewed heavily to brushing down from above. The zenithal was heavy, so the drybrush was too.

Basecoats

  1. The fabrics are basecoated with Sigvald Burgundy and Soulblight Grey , with the gambesons based in Aggaros Dunes
  2. Wood is based in Wyldwood .
Any crossbow strings, furs or drum skins get a coat of Snakebite Leather
  3. Leather areas are covered in an initial layer of Cygor Brown with the boots and hats basecoated in Black Legion
  4. Bones are initially Temple Stone , and any beards on the zombies get an initial pass of Militarum Green
  5. Any buckles, sword hilts or decorative areas are primed in Ancientgold , with the armour plates and weapon blades getting an initial pass of Typhus Corrosion for some extra texture.
  6. The skins on the zombies are basecoated with 3 different tones, mixed interchangeably among the models. Griffon Claw , Rodent Grey and Necrotic Flesh

Drybrush

  1. The entire models are then drybrushed back up with Trooper White .
Armoured areas are avoided best I can.

Phase 2

  1. The armoured areas, shields and weapons are covered mostly with Dwarven Iron . If some Typhus Corrosion shows through that's alright, so long as none of the white is showing on the metal.
  2. The burgundy areas are now covered over with Doomfire Magenta and Volupus Pink interchangeably.
The light grey cloth areas and the gambesons get a heavy coat of Mortarion Grime
  3. The wooden areas are given a coat of Snakebite Leather , with some Militarum Green in places, especially on the bases, to simulate rotting wood.
  4. The zombie skin is given one of the following washes, randomized for some variation: Necrosis Green Wash , Tempest Blue Wash and Flesh Wash
  5. Leather areas are now covered with Wyldwood or Garaghak's Sewer , alternating if you want some variation.
Hats and boots are now covered with Ratling Grime
  6. Bones are given a coat of Skeleton Horde
Furs, crossbow strings and drum skins are now given a coat of Aggaros Dunes
  7. Buckles and ornamental details are picked up with Battle Axe Brass and Tainted Gold interchangeably.

Highlights

  1. Not much is highlighted as this is very much intended as a speedpainting recipe.
The skin is brought up with Grotesque Green and Ivory Tusk
  2. Bones are picked out with Ivory Tusk , and the edges of the armour plates, shields and blades are picked up with Plate Armour
  3. Trooper White is used to sketch in the insignia on the flags and banners. It's ok if this is rough, zombies painted it, they're not known for their artistry.

Weathering and Basing

  1. Gold details can be given a bit of Verdigris , but I saved this for gold areas rather than details, such as the facemask on the Doomseeker.
  2. Dirty Down Rust is used all over the armour plates, shield and weapons.
This is shortly after reactivated with a wet brush after and partially removed, like the reductive technique used with oils.
  3. Dry Blood is used to place blood on appropriate places on the zombies.
  4. Base rims are painted with Black Legion
Any water puddles are given a little bit of Geek Gaming's River Bed, then layered up with AK Interactive Puddles.

Vampire Skin

  1. For skin from specifically living models such as necromancers and vampires, my method so far is to base with Griffon Claw , shade with Magos Purple and highlight with Ivory Tusk
