This is my take on the classic Word Bearers colour scheme. I added black shoulder pads to denote his Veteran status.

The main colours are crimson, black, and silver.

General Information:

My general method is to lay down all the base colours for the model, then do all the shading in the recesses before moving on to the highlights.

I don't own an airbrush, so the recipe will mainly consist of brush on paints.

Priming:

I find the metallic sprays from GW tend to be a little on the transparent side, so an initial undercoat of grey helps.

  1. Prime the model lightly with Mechanicus Standard Grey
  2. Prime over that with a coat of Leadbelcher

Silver (Armour Trim):

I generally start with the armour trim so that any time I get paint on another piece its easy to cover later.

For grenades, replace Nuln Oil with Athonian Camoshade

  1. Drybrush over the model lightly with Leadbelcher to even out the colour.
  2. Shade the recesses and around any rivets with Nuln Oil
  3. Highlight any fine points and sharp edges with Stormhost Silver

Crimson (Armour Panels):

  1. Base the areas with Khorne Red
  2. Shade the recesses with Agrax Earthshade
  3. Trace along the inside of the armour trim with a thin coat of Black Templar
  4. Add a fine line of Wazdakka Red inside the panel following the armour trim, allowing the Black Templar to show through
  5. Add a thin line of Cadian Fleshtone inside the line of Wazdakka Red on upper edges or around points

Black (Details - Should Pads, Armour Ribbing, Weapon Casings):

  1. Base the area with Abaddon Black
  2. Add a thin line of Eshin Grey around any armour trim leaving a thin space for some Abaddon Black to show through
  3. Add a thin highlight of Dawnstone inside the line of Eshin Grey around any points or sharp edges

Gold (Details - Skulls, Belt Clips, Weapons)

  1. Base the parts with Retributor Armour
  2. Shade the recesses with Agrax Earthshade
  3. Highlight fine points and sharp edges with Stormhost Silver

Flayed Skin (Details - Belts, Weapon Wraps, and Tabard):

  1. Base with Rakarth Flesh
  2. Shade the recesses with Reikland Fleshshade
  3. Highlight the edges with Pallid Wych Flesh

Brown (Details - Leather Pouches)

  1. Base with Rhinox Hide
  2. Shade the recesses with Agrax Earthshade
  3. Roughly highlight the edges with Skrag Brown
  4. Add a finer highlight of Ushabti Bone allowing for some Skrag Brown to show through

Green (Details - Lenses)

  1. Base with Caliban Green
  2. Shade the recesses with Nuln Oil
  3. Layer the middle with Warpstone Glow
  4. Add a fine point of Moot Green
