The Citadel Guard! Quite a simple yet very classic look and scheme, they are really fun to paint. Prime the miniature black. Since these are metal minis, a spray primer is preferred if possible. Order of operations is not overly important, however, I like to start with the faces since they are quite recessed into the helmets.

Metals

  1. Base in a dark metal, such as Leadbelcher or Gunmetal Metallic
  2. Wash with Nuln Oil
  3. Chunky highlight with Ironbreaker
  4. Edge highlight with Stormhost Silver or Chrome Metallic

Cloak

  1. Base in Eshin Grey
  2. Recess shade with thin Abaddon Black , do multiple passes in more reccessed areas and less in more shallow areas.
  3. Glaze raised areas with Mechanicus Standard Grey
  4. Glaze raised areas with Dawnstone , covering less than the previous step
  5. Highlight using Administratum Grey , focus on shoulders, near the head, and sharpest raised areas of the cloak

Skirt - black

  1. Base in Abaddon Black
  2. Glaze raised areas with Eshin Grey

Yellow

The signature color for the citadel guard! This is painted on the edges of the skirt, and on the front edges of the cloak.

  1. Base in Steel Legion Drab
  2. Base in Zamesi Desert
  3. Paint small crosses with Abaddon Black on the skirt, be patient, and if you screw up, go back and repaint it yellow.

Brown Leather (straps, scabbard)

The movies and the GW paintjobs do a black leather for these parts, however I like a little more color in the Gondor models so I do a quite desaturated brown instead. However, if you prefer the classic black leather look, then go for that!

  1. Base in Thondia Brown
  2. Highlight with Steel Legion Drab
  3. On the scabbard, do some scratches of Baneblade Brown

Blue/Black leather (gloves)

You do these in a grey scale instead, using similar colors to the cloak, or do a blueish tint as below.

  1. Base in Abaddon Black
  2. Chunky highlight with Dark Reaper
  3. Edge highlight with Thunderhawk Blue
  4. Spot highlight with Russ Grey

Gold

  1. Base in Retributor Armour
  2. Wash with Reikland Fleshshade
  3. Mix a little silver such as Stormhost Silver or Chrome Metallic in the gold and edge highlight.

Wood

  1. Base in Dryad Bark
  2. Paint small lines with Gorthor Brown
  3. Paint smaller lines with Baneblade Brown

Face - caucasian skin

  1. Base in Bugman's Glow
  2. Mix a little Cadian Fleshtone , around a 1:1 mix, cover most of the face with this mix, avoiding recesses.
  3. Mix in more Cadian Fleshtone , covering less parts than before.
  4. Finish by mixing a little Kislev Flesh in the current mix and highlighting some spots, such as the chin and upper lip.
  5. In the recesses where the face and the helmet meets, paint a very thin, glaze-constistency Khorne Red
  6. Do the eyes by painting a thin line of Rhinox Hide in the eyes, then a small dot of White Scar on each side of the line.
