This is a written version of the Duncan Rhodes tutorial. Not my work.
How I painted my copy of the official 'Warrior Priest' model for the new game 1490 Doom. I looked at a load of artwork for medieval priests and found one I liked. I took those colour choices and applied it to the (admittedly different) equipment of my Warrior Priest. No regrets.

⚔️ Lore Context & Painting Philosophy
The Uruk-hai of Isengard are among the most iconic villains in Tolkien's legendarium — brutal, disciplined, and born from foul sorcery. Engineered by Saruman to surpass Orcs in strength, stature, and resilience, they first emerge en masse during the siege of Helm’s Deep, clad in grim iron and bearing the White Hand of their master.
Visually, Uruk-hai blend crude industry with brutal efficiency: patchwork steel plate, dark chainmail, and filthy leather wrappings over corrupted flesh. Their aesthetic is intentionally unrefined — everything about their design screams mass-produced cruelty.
This painting guide is designed to:
- Recreate the cinematic look of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy
- Be efficient enough to batch-paint large forces
- Provide options for detailing your heroes or centerpieces
This core guide focuses on the armoured Uruk-hai Warrior wielding sword and shield. We'll also include adaptations for Scouts and Berserkers.
Viking warriors painted in a variety of colors. The main principle is to highlight on a upward fashion. The first highlight is only applied from the waist to the head and the second only in the face, hair and shoulders. Most of the colors are highlighted with a desaturaded version of themselves to get a slight washed out appearance.
The new Kill Team models have a way more involved design that the old artwork, but I have tried to stay as true as possible with mine. I think the additional colours make sense.
