Here is how I paint the main components of the armour for my Tome Keepers Space Marine Kill Team. A video guide is available on my YouTube channel.
The Fire Giant from the Blood Rage board game is an excellent mini for testing lava on the base, a fiery sword, glowing runes on the body and OSL effects. My intention was to trial various different effects on different parts of the mini, so just take your pick of the bits you like.
This tutorial (including painting the whole mini) was first published in full about a year ago in three separate posts on https://boardgamegeek.com/blog/8627/griff-glowens-beginners-painting-blog
This guide is a work in progress for now. I will update all of the recipes used as I go bit plan on finishing up each of the models when I feel inspired.
Here are the steps I took when painting this playing piece from 'Wizkids' version of the board game "Relic". If you like the look of this bust, it is available with the specific edition available here: https://amzn.to/3paDgCQ Please be aware that the 'Fantasy Flight' version has different resin busts/playing pieces.
A step-by-step painting guide to the Inceptors, the fateful Ultramarine successor chapter.
Rough steps for my reference. I will change and refine as I go.
Used on pauldron trim and accessories. The technique for highlights is starting from the center of the highlight use thin lines going across. As you move away from the highlight leave greater and greater space between each line showing the base coat or previous highlight layer showing.

Step by step on how I paint Tyranid Termagants in the Hive Fleet Leviathan colour scheme.
Standard way to paint New Wave models. Used so far for New Wave Expansion Pack Alpha (3 miniatures: 1 Teucer with Plasma Sniper Rifle, 1 Patroclus with Heavy Rocket Launcher, and 1 Contrabandolero Hacker with Submachine Gun).
First time I've painted New Wave and was a fun way to do some more distinct colour. Wanted to make sure red really worked (had to try a few different paints before settling on contrast as base and then highlighting up from there)
Painting horns and bones for the Death Guard legion.
The painting processes contains a lot of glazing, so remember to thin your paints down enough for smooth transitions.
Hints:
- Use a good medium to thin your paints down like Contrast or Lahmian Medium. I don't recommend water, because it breaks up the pigmets too much for my taste.
- glaze (very thinned paint) the bones from bottom to the top, applying multiple thinned layers while getting closer to the top.
- mix colors for even smoother transitions
Some experiments with textured paints and washes.
